Hyderabad– Ahead of the opening Test series against England, Indian captain Rohit Sharma highlighted the significance of integrating young players into the longer format. Sharma emphasized the team’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent while avoiding scenarios where inexperienced players are thrust into challenging overseas conditions.
With Virat Kohli’s absence for the first two Tests due to personal reasons, the inclusion of Rajat Patidar in the squad over more seasoned players like Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane has raised eyebrows. Sharma addressed this decision, stating, “Leaving out an experienced player is challenging due to their track record, but it’s crucial to provide opportunities to the newcomers, especially in favorable conditions.”
During the pre-match press conference, Sharma discussed the rationale behind opting for Patidar, who recently showcased his prowess in the India ‘A’ squad against England Lions in Ahmedabad. Patidar’s impressive innings of 151 off 158 balls in a pressure situation solidified his place in the Test squad.
The captain also highlighted the dilemma of choosing between experienced wicketkeeper KS Bharat and the uncapped Dhruv Jurel, stressing that doors remain open for players who stay fit and consistently perform.
“It’s important to look at other players; we don’t want a situation where a majority of the team has minimal Test experience. Whenever there’s an opportunity, giving game time to emerging talents is crucial,” added Sharma.
India is gearing up to defend its unbeaten Test series record at home, facing England led by Ben Stokes and coached by Brendon McCullum. Sharma expressed the team’s focus on playing their brand of cricket, brushing aside concerns about England’s attacking approach.
Reflecting on India’s recent Test victory against South Africa in Cape Town, Sharma acknowledged the confidence gained but emphasized the distinct conditions and opposition in the upcoming series.
“The atmosphere in the changing room is positive after the Cape Town win. Winning games boosts morale, and we aim to carry that confidence into this series,” concluded Sharma.
