ICC revokes ban on Sri Lanka Cricket - MudassarWorld Sports News

In a significant development in Sri Lanka cricket news, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced on Sunday the revocation of its ban on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) with immediate effect. The ban had been imposed during the ICC World Cup 2023 in November, citing persistent governmental interference in board affairs.

“The International Cricket Council lifted the ban on Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) today with immediate effect,” stated the ICC in a press release.

The ban was initially implemented on November 10, 2023, during which Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) was suspended for violating its responsibilities as an ICC Member, particularly failing to manage its affairs autonomously and prevent government interference in cricket governance within Sri Lanka.

Although the ban has been lifted, Sri Lanka forfeited the hosting rights for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, currently underway in South Africa.

“The ICC Board convened on November 21 and decided that Sri Lanka can resume international competition in bilateral cricket and ICC events. However, the ongoing U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup was relocated to South Africa, originally slated to be held in Sri Lanka,” the press release clarified.

Following continuous monitoring since the suspension, the ICC Board is now satisfied that SLC is in compliance with its membership obligations.

It is noteworthy that in November, the ICC had criticized Sri Lanka Cricket for being “in serious breach” of its membership obligations, emphasizing the imperative to manage its affairs independently and shield cricket governance from governmental influence.

The ICC’s ban on Sri Lanka cricket came swiftly after the country’s parliament demanded the board’s resignation amid allegations by Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe of financial misconduct involving millions of dollars.
