A potent atmospheric river unleashed heavy rain and flash flooding across Southern California, prompting Governor Gavin Newsom to declare a state of emergency in eight counties, including Los Angeles and Orange County.

CNN reported that LA and San Bernardino County also declared their own states of emergency.

“Losing Angeles County is taking proactive measures to safeguard our communities during this storm and to facilitate recovery from any resulting impacts,” stated Lindsey P. Horvath, Chair of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.

Following Sunday’s deluge, over 11 million Californians face significant risk of life-threatening flooding, with parts of the Los Angeles area projected to receive nearly half a year’s worth of rainfall by Tuesday.

The heavy rain and strong winds associated with the intense atmospheric river caused over 900,000 California power customers to lose electricity, prompting officials to caution about one of the most severe weather events in recent memory.
