Cricket Star Usman Khawaja Stages Protest Despite ICC Warning – Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja registers Gaza protest wearing black armband
Australian cricketer Usman Khawaja found a unique way to express his protest against Israel’s actions in Gaza during the first Test match against Pakistan in Perth. Khawaja, originally from Pakistan, had planned to wear shoes with slogans like “Freedom is a human right” and “All lives are equal.” However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) warned him against displaying political messages.
In compliance with ICC rules, Khawaja covered the slogans with semi-transparent tape, leaving them visible only up close. Additionally, he wore a black armband, a gesture Cricket Australia explained as a show of solidarity. Despite the ban on his footwear, Khawaja asserted his commitment to what he called “a humanitarian appeal.”
In a recent Instagram video, Khawaja questioned the indifference towards innocent lives lost in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He expressed frustration with the ICC’s stance, highlighting the inconsistency in enforcing guidelines related to religious expressions on players’ equipment.
