freiburg spiel heute SC Freiburg versus RC Lens: Europa League – 3:2 After 0:2, SCF Storms into the Round of 16
With a strong comeback into the round of 16, SC Freiburg’s journey in the Europa League continues. In the second leg of the second round, coach Christian Streich’s team defeated RC Lens after a 0:2 deficit with a 3:2 (2:2, 0:2) victory in extra time, improving on their strong performance from the previous week.
In the first leg in the northern French cauldron, the Bundesliga team fought for a goalless draw. Now, SCF eagerly anticipates the next top-class opponent as the lottery balls will be drawn in Nyon on Friday.
Roland Sallai (67th/90+3rd) saved the Breisgau team from a sold-out crowd with a brace in extra time. Substitute Michael Gregoritsch (99th) scored the winning goal, and Freiburg finally celebrated again after five competitive games without a win. Lens initially took the lead through David Pereira da Costa (28th) and Elye Wahi (45th+2nd).
Freiburg was initially too cautious. Like last year, the sports club is in the round of 16, with Juventus Turin being the final destination then. Lens, on the other hand, had to endure their second international knockout this season, having previously been relegated from the Champions League.
“We only have a chance if we reach the maximum of our capabilities,” SC coach Streich said before kick-off, and Vincenzo Grifo called for “efficiency.” As in the first leg, the set-piece specialist initially took a seat on the bench, with Merlin Röhl starting in his place. Matthias Ginter returned to the squad after Achilles tendon problems and, like Grifo, came onto the field shortly before the end of regular time.
Despite personnel shortages, Freiburg’s defense was convincing in Lens, and the SCF was compact this time too. However, there was a lack of penetration going forward. Both the hosts and the guests lacked the necessary bite in the final third. There were no compelling chances; both teams acted patiently.
But then the French cheered – at the invitation of Noah Atubolu. The SC goalkeeper clumsily cleared a free kick with one fist, and Pereira da Costa thanked him. Things got even better for Lens: After a SC free kick, the ball hit the post in the confusion (33rd) before Wahi struck in stoppage time.
In the second half, Streich strengthened the offensive with Noah Weißhaupt and Michael Gregoritsch. Freiburg ran, Lens managed – and was lucky that referee Rade Obrenovic didn’t award a penalty after a tackle on Röhl. A little later, Sallai gave new hope with a free kick before scoring a celebrated goal to equalize in stoppage time. Gregoritsch then finally turned the game around.
